Men work, women sit at home and take care of children. Such order has existed for centuries and didn't cause any hesitations in society, it was undeniable, like today no one would dispute the existence of gravity. Women couldn't even think about saying a word against man. The reason of such discrimination is really unknown, it just... happened. Maybe, it's something about biology, but the main thing is the stereotype, that existed for ages: men are usually stronger, than women, they usually spend less time with children, so working and bringing food to the house - that's their business. That's why there were no women scientists before second half of XIX century (REALLY NO, even if you try to remember), no female religious leaders, women could vote before XX century. Because their business is to sit at home and watch "Dom-2" (or something they did before XX century). Women were more dishwasher, than an human.

But on the other side, the same stereotype caused men's respect to women as to the weaker ones. But that respect is quite similar to feed the alms for the poor. It is reflected on the etiquette rules, like helping women in transport or letting them to pass in a queue in real gentlemen's life. Remember the situation on the sinking Titanic: men passed women and children to the lifeboats - it is a consequence of stereotype of "female weakness" too.

Nowadays the society becomes more more liberal, tendencies of total equality spread into people's mind. People fight against poorness, racism, nationalism... So women put down their brushes and said: "We're people too!". And began to fight for their rights, saying, that they're no different from men. Yes, feminists appeared. Because really, stereotype - prejudice, that hasn't got any proofs or reasons. And all "discriminative" stereotypes are declined (or have a tendency to be declined) in our society. You couldn't even imagine Margaret Thatcher as a Prime Minister 200 years before. And now they're everywhere... Eh...
Feminists think are not weaker and don't need any help. Even giving them seats in transport.
In my opinion, we live in a great time of changes: no one can predict what will be with the women in next 100 years. I think, that they got to have a right to choose what will she be: traditional weak lady or progressive and ambitious suffragete. But not two in one. And no one should interrupt them
